ARRIVE Guidelines

Aarhus University supports The ARRIVE guidelines, which are a set of guidelines developed to improve the reporting of animal experiments in scientific publications.

ARRIVE = A-nimal R-esearch: R-eporting of I-n V-ivo E-xperiments

The guidelines were originally developed by the NC3Rs (National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research) to ensure that animal experiments are reported in detail and transparently so that the research can be properly evaluated and reproduced by other researchers.

Purpose of the ARRIVE guidelines:

  • Improve transparency in animal testing
  • Increase the reproducibility of research results
  • Minimise the waste of laboratory animals by ensuring that experiments are not repeated unnecessarily
  • Promote animal welfare by ensuring that experiments are designed and reported ethically

Main components of ARRIVE:

ARRIVE consists of two levels of guidelines:

1. Essential 10:

(the most important information that should always be included)

  • Purpose and hypothesis of the study
  • Number and characteristics of experimental animals
  • Experimental design
  • Randomisation and blinding
  • Results and data analysis
  • Animal welfare considerations
  • Funding and potential conflicts of interest

2. Recommended Set:

(additional information for more comprehensive reporting)

  • Detailed description of experimental conditions
  • Data collection methods
  • Statistics and analysis methods
