Animal welfare at Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences

Objective

The overall objective of the animal welfare body is to advise on, provide information about and contribute to the welfare of the laboratory animals and ensure the use of the 3Rs - Replacement, Reduction and Refinement. Furthermore, the body must establish internal operating procedures for monitoring, reporting and following up on the welfare of the laboratory animals.

The welfare body has the following tasks:

  • Advise on issues relating to the welfare of the animals in connection with acquisition, stabling, care and use.
  • Advise on the application of the principles of replacement, reduction and refinement (the 3Rs).
  • Provide information on the technical and scientific development in the field of replacement, reduction and refinement (3Rs).
  • Establish and update internal operating procedures with respect to monitoring, reporting and following up regarding the welfare of the animals that are housed or used at the institution.
  • Monitor the development and results of projects, taking into account the effect on the animals used, and identify and advise on factors which can further contribute to replacement, reduction and refinement (3Rs).
  • Advise on plans for how animals that are to be relocated or sent back to a habitat or production system that is appropriate for the species can be rehabilitated, including socialisation.
